Chess and math: what the labs do

Why every chapter ends with a STEM lab, from White to Black.

We do not claim chess raises grades; the research points both ways. So the method does not wait for chess to turn into math on its own: every chapter ends with a lab that makes the math explicit.

Seven parts, every lab

Every chapter ends with a STEM lab in seven parts: predict, measure, record, show, conclude, connect, and an exit ticket. Each lab ends with a footer naming the New York State mathematics or computer-science standard it practices.

From grids to algorithms

  • White: W1.1 The Board Is a Grid.
  • Orange: O2.1 The Calculation Tree.
  • Blue: B3.1 Build an Evaluation Function.
  • Black: Bl2.1 Alpha-Beta by Hand.

Practicing a standard is not the same as mastering it, and we do not claim mastery.
