For families

A real book for every rank, and a rank your learner earns.

The Eight Ranks Method is a belt-ranked chess curriculum for learners aged 6 to adult. Ranks are awarded only at a licensed site, after its Rank Day.

At home, with the book

Every chapter has a Family Corner for an adult at home, with a question for the adult to ask. The answers to each chapter's exercises are at the end of the chapter.

At a licensed site

After each twelve-week cycle comes Rank Day: a quiz, a puzzle set, games, a short oral explanation and the cycle's portfolio, weighted by tier. Families receive a Rank Progress Report within two weeks of Rank Day.

Privacy

Sites keep records by student code, not by name, and publish no learner's name, photograph or score without written consent.

A certificate, not a belt

The eight colours are the names of the ranks, not something to wear: no belt, bracelet, band, pin or token is given. Each rank earned is recorded by a printed certificate and the Rank Progress Report.

Where to start

Start with White, unless the learner already plays well; a licensed site can place a strong learner higher by the placement rule at entry. No chess experience is needed to begin: Square One starts from zero.

Want a site near you?

Ask your club, library or school about a licence. A licensed site runs its own cycle with its own instructor; nobody from the company attends.

How licensing works

Not issued, approved or endorsed by the New York State Education Department or any school district. Schools decide how to use its reports.
